Stone held up a hand. “It’s just Rorey.”

“What’s he doing here?” Nathan asked as Stone reached out for the doorknob.

Relief washed over me, but it was short-lived. As Stone swung the door open, I saw Rorey’s face etched with worry. His eyes darted around the room until they landed on Nathan.

“Nathan!” Rorey exclaimed, rushing past Stone to embrace his brother. “I’m glad you’re back.”

Nathan stumbled back, caught off guard by Rorey’s sudden appearance and intensity. “What are you doing here?”

“I came to ask for help,” Rorey said, pulling back. “We have a problem.”

I pushed myself off the couch, my exhaustion shoved to the side. “What kind of problem?”

“It’s Lilly,” Rorey said, taking a deep breath as his eyes locked onto his brother’s. “She’s gone missing.”

Nathan’s face drained of color. “What? When?” How did this happen? You were supposed to keep an eye on her.”

“I don’t know. I thought I was,” Rorey said, sticking his fingers into his hair. “We woke up this morning, and she was just… gone. No note or anything.”

I watched as Nathan’s shock turned to anger. “And you just left to come here? Why aren’t you out looking for her?”

“We searched everywhere nearby,” Rorey explained, his voice tight. “Mom’s still looking, and I came here hoping to get more help while waiting for you to return.”

“Shit,” Nathan said, stomping toward the door. He left the house without another word, leaving Rorey standing alone in the living room.

There was a part of me that wanted to just collapse back down on the sofa and let someone else deal with whatever was going on. Lilly had made it clear she hated me, so why should I care?

But as I looked at Rorey’s worried face, I felt a twinge of guilt. Lilly was just a kid, barely more than a child thrust into this nightmare world. Her anger toward me was only there because Earl had taught her that was the way.

If Mindy and her vile Rogue Sisterhood found her, it could get bad. Or the insectoids could find her first and turn her into one of them. No matter how much Lilly disliked me, I couldn’t bear the thought of her suffering a fate she didn’t deserve.

“How can I help?” I asked, surprising myself.

Rorey’s eyes widened with a mix of shock and relief. “Really?”

“Yeah, sure,” I said, pressing my lips into a thin smile. “I could check the woods or something.”

Rorey started listing the areas they’d already checked close to their property, but it left a lot of places she could be. Finding one girl in this dangerous world wouldn’t be easy, but we had to try. For Nathan’s sake, for Rorey’s and Martha’s too.

Stone placed a hand on my shoulder. “Nora, maybe you should sit this one out. Get some rest.”

“I could say the same to you,” I said, cocking my head. “We’ll cover more ground together.”

“I know there is no point in arguing with you,” Stone said, a small smile tugging at his lips. He turned to Rorey and looked into his eyes.
